Wheal Martyn
Wheal Martyn launches Curator Appeal and Friends of Wheal MartynWheal Martyn is determined to keep the rich heritage of Cornwall’s important China Clay industry alive and to aid this has launched an appeal to raise funds for a much needed part time curator for the museum. The appeal was launched at a fundraising evening hosted by Lady Mary Holborow and the charities Chairman, Jacqui Edwards on 6 October 2010 and included a silent auction for some wonderful donated prizes including a stunning piece of Leach pottery and original artwork by local artists Stuart Thorn and Jenny Beavan. Jacqui Edwards said ‘we have identified the urgent need for a curator for the museum and do not have sufficient funds to employ someone in that vital role so have set ourselves an ambitious target of £30,000 to fund a part time post’
This post is important to ensure that the heritage, many artefacts and vast collections we have at Wheal Martyn are well documented, preserved and safeguarded to the highest museum standards for future generations. Their role will also be instrumental in keeping our displays and exhibitions fresh and interesting ensuring the collection is shown to its best advantage and is accessible to everyone. It is our goal to keep the interest of the general public engaged and to provide a focal point for organisations and individuals wishing to research both the social and industrial history for which we are happily receiving ever increasing numbers of enquires.
Also at the event Lady Mary launched a friends of Wheal Martyn scheme saying ‘every thriving local museum has a family of volunteers and friends and, if they are lucky, business sponsors, who make the charitable work possible’ Becoming a friend is a wonderful way to support your local museum and amongst other things entitles you to free entry to the museum and grounds throughout the year giving you a chance to see Wheal Martyn through the changing seasons, you can also give friendship as a gift – what an excellent present for a family with children.
