China Clay Country Park - Educational Resources

The Country Park intends to provide learning experiences which are both enjoyable and thought-provoking; experiences which literally build on the foundations laid by industry and enables the children to interact with the industrial heritage of the 'Clay Country'.

Amidst the immense scale of the Cornish china clay industry, individual stories, experiences and lives can be eclipsed and forgotten. The exhibition space seeks to retell the story of the people who lived, worked and played in the shadows of the giant waste tips; the immense white pyramids which depict their own story of how the clay industry has impacted on this part of Cornwall. The museum believes that it is through many of these individual lives that the larger picture of the china clay industry can be seen, experienced and understood.

The Country Park is an important part of the heritage of the area and it has a wealth of resources available for schools to use. But the  Country Park isn’t just about the china clay industry. It is about history, numeracy, literacy, science, art and much more, all of which work together to bring the site to life.  It is about bringing the curriculum to life by helping to make these subjects fascinating and relevant.

We provide learning opportunities that both engage and excite within the context of Cornwall's history. To assist with this the Country Park has developed six primary teaching units to reflect the impact of the Clay Industry on the surrounding communities and countryside and to utilise resources available at the Country Park.

The Teaching Units materials, which have been teacher-developed and trialed at Tywardreath School, include lesson plans, photo and multimedia resources and makes specific links to learning opportunities that can be discovered during teacher-led visits and guided tours to the Country Park.

To make the life of busy teachers easier all of the teaching units and resources are available on CD at a cost of Ł10. The museum has also developed a rocks and minerals loans box and has a handling objects collection that can be loaned out to schools. To buy a teaching resource cd or to find out more about education opportunites at the China Clay Country Park please contact the park on 01726 850362 or e mail info@chinaclaycountry.co.uk

Synopsis of the Teaching Units

"Cookworthy" (KS1 History)

In this unit children learn about the life of William Cookworthy, founding father of the Cornish Clay Industry. Through exploring his life, the children discover Cookworthy as both scientist and pioneer. Children will also find out about the Cornish china clay industry, how the modern process of mining the china clay has both changed and remained remarkably similar to historic excavation methods and the importance of china clay to industry worldwide today.

"Words of Clay" (KS2 Literacy)

Following in the footsteps of the poet Jack Clemo, who lived his whole live within the ‘clay country’, this teaching unit gives children the opportunity to reflect upon the china clay area and industry; what was it like working within the industry and the impact of the industry on the landscape. The sequence of lesson ideas follow the theme of the china clay area, both landscape and industry. It is intended that as the children work through the lessons they gain inspiration from the images that accompany the unit as well as from visiting the China Clay Country Park itself.

"On the Rocks" (KS2 Science)

Through its focus on the common rocks and minerals of Cornwall, including china clay, this teaching units delves into the very foundations of Kernow itself. Through the unit, children discover the rock cycle; they find out how different rocks are formed and investigate how the characteristics of certain rocks are exploited for different purposes. They discover the importance of minerals to Cornwall and in particular the importance of china clay to a modern world. A schools rocks and minerals loan box is available to back up this unit. To book this please contact the curator.

"Landscapes of Clay" (Art)

Energised_Water_1._1.jpg

In this unit children explore the rural and industrial landscape of the clay country as a starting point for two or three-dimensional work. The China Clay industry has had a dramatic impact on the landscape of the area, creating the distinctive 'white alps' of mid-Cornwall. In addition the industrial buildings themselves, the ruined engine houses and other related buildings also provide a good starting point. The children investigate and explore the work of a local artist and use both this and the landscape around them as a stimulus for their own artwork.

"Heritage of Clay" (KS2 History)

In this unit children investigate some of the ways the China Clay area changed during the Victorian era, and explore some of the reasons for those changes. Children use the local area to explore characteristic features of Victorian times, how the area changed over time and the reasons for and results of these changes The children can discover what life was like working in a Victorian china clay works and see if they could be a successful kettle boy. They develop their sense of chronology, and ask and answer questions, from pictures, census and map information and other sources.

"China Clay Habitats" (KS2 Science)

P25___Nuthatch_1.jpg

Through the environments created by the China Clay industry, children will begin to understand the concept of a habitat, how it provides organisms found there with conditions for life and how animals depend on plants or other animals that eat plants for food. Throughout the unit ways in which organisms are suited to the habitat are emphasised, especially in terms of woodland or pond habitats that can be studied at the China Clay Country Park.

The country park is actively seeking to encourage local schools to explore thier clay heritage and has a dedicated display area available to local schools to showcase their students work relating to china clay. If you are a local teacher or have visited the park as part of a schools project, we would like to hear from you about what you think of our education resources and how we can continue to improve them.
