Legacy

Think of your favourite place, a gardens, a river, a museum, somewhere you go to relax and enjoy yourself. We all have places we love and want to share with others. We know that everyone has a different reason for loving Wheal Martyn, you may have worked in the china clay industry, have a passion for conserving our Scheduled Ancient Monument, collection and archives or simply been inspired by a visit to the museum.

Why leave a gift in your will?

Leaving a legacy is one of the most enduring ways in which you can support Wheal Martyn. A gift in your will to us will helps us preserve and improve this unique, internationally important site and the collection we care for. A gift of even 1% of your estate can make a real difference so after you have provided for your loved ones and friends perhaps you will be kind enough to consider Wheal Martyn Trust in your will.
We are so grateful to everyone who has already left us a legacy, no matter how small or large their gift. Every penny helps us protect this special place now and for future generations to enjoy.

+HOW A GIFT IN YOUR WILL HELPS WHEAL MARTYN

Leaving a gift in your will is a fantastic way to ensure that future generations discover how important the china clay industry was to Cornwall and rest of the world.
Your help means our innovative range of educational programs, exhibitions and hands-on activities can continue to enrich all of our visitors’ experiences. Last year, just over 20,000 people visited Wheal Martyn with many of those being school children in educational groups.
As a charity, we rely on the generosity of all our supporters to carry out our work. Gifts left to the Trust in people’s wills are vital so that we can conserve, maintain and interpret the remarkable collections and ancient buildings here at Wheal Martyn for future generations. Thanks to the donations from kind individuals the Museum can continue to tell the amazing story that began here in this beautiful part of Cornwall.
Every gift in every will makes a difference no matter how large or small. Whether you decide to leave £50, £5,000 or more, it will all help us to achieve our mission.

+WHAT WOULD WE DO WITH YOUR BEQUEST?

Legacies will be used to create three special funds which Trustees will use to support the delivery of the Trust’s charitable objectives.  In particular the funds will support preservation of the collection, specific projects and securing the museums long-term future.

+HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

Wheal Martyn is a registered charity so any bequest that you make to Wheal Martyn Trust will be exempt from inheritance tax and leaving a legacy gift in your Will is more straightforward than people think. It is important to make sure that your Will does exactly what you want it to. Gifts to Wheal Martyn or any charity can be a specified sum of money (a pecuniary gift) or a proportion of your residuary estate (a residuary gift). Many people choose to leave some or all of their residuary estate to charity; once you have made provision for family and friends, the residue provides an excellent opportunity to give support to the charities which matter most to you.
By leaving more than 10 per cent of your estate to charity you can also benefit in an overall reduction in inheritance tax from 40 per cent to 36 per cent. This could reduce the amount of tax that may have to be paid out of your estate, leaving more for all the beneficiaries. For UK taxpayers there has never been a better time to consider leaving a charitable legacy.
It won’t cost you anything now but your contribution will support our charity’s aims of education and conservation. If you’ve been inspired by our work please consider leaving a gift to Wheal Martyn. Every gift, large or small will be used to further develop our work.

Making a Will

Making a will is not difficult and need not be expensive. There are a number of ways you can make a will but we would strongly recommend that you visit a solicitor who will be able to advise you. Solicitors will charge a fee, but you will receive sound professional advice and can be sure that your wishes are accurately reflected. The fee will depend on the detail of the will you write but prices usually start from around £150.

If you already have a Will but want to leave a gift to Wheal Martyn

If you already have a Will but would like to leave a gift to Wheal Martyn Trust, you can do so by making a simple addition to your existing will. This is called a codicil. This document is a supplement to your will enabling you to include new instructions and delete old ones without having to go through the task of rewriting the whole will.
