We are aiming to create warmth and cheer in the community this December; in recognition of the challenges of 2020, the museum team has produced a Winter Warmer Craft Activity Pack for families to enjoy together as Christmas approaches - to lift the spirits, get families outside, and to foster a sense of community togetherness.

Many local families are struggling to make ends meet and keep family life on track in these challenging times. The Winter Warmer Craft Activity Pack is a pack of craft materials and instructions to make a handful of festive crafts, decorations and gifts, all suitable for children to make with their parents.

Gemma Martin, Education Officer at Wheal Martyn said, “We have included everything in the packs, so the families won’t need to buy or provide anything. We are working together with Cornwall Council Children and Family Services to distribute the packs to families in the St Austell area.  We hope they will bring some festive cheer and give families an opportunity to have some fun together being creative as Christmas approaches”.

The pack will be sent to local families in need of extra support at the beginning of December. The café at Wheal Martyn has also baked dozens of homemade Christmas cakes for the families.

There will be an opportunity for children to wear their homemade crafts at the museum’s Elves and Rein-dog Weekend on 12 – 13 December. There is also a Reindeer Hunt from 3 to 23 December, where families can explore the historic grounds and woodland trails in search of crafted reindeer.
