From 1 August, families will be able to enjoy our jam-packed new summer programme, including a variety of creative drop-in and self-led activities suitable for the whole family on selected dates throughout the month.

Ceramic painting and artistic clay sculpting activities will encourage children to explore the china clay industry in a dynamic, interactive and thought-provoking way.

Sue Ford, Museum Manager, said, “We are so pleased to be able to offer accessible activities to engage both our localboy doing pottery painting communities and visitors from further afield. At Wheal Martyn, we are fortunate to enjoy not only extensive woodlands and nature trails for families to explore, but also an interactive Discovery Centre and new learning space, through which we can bring to life the fascinating and important stories of Cornwall’s china clay industry.”

Also on display until 28 September, the ‘Art on the Menu’ exhibition at Wheal Martyn provides a fascinating insight into the story of the shifting ceramics market in 1930s Britain. The exhibition features remarkable tableware painted by artists involved in a 1934 Harrods experiment.

For those keen to engage face-to-face with people from the industry, we are offering ‘People of the Industry’ breakfasts on 6 August and 3 September, with opportunities to talk to those who have worked with china clay over a full Cornish breakfast, followed by a guided tour of the historic clay works.
