Sustainability in Focus: The Imagination Museum in Cornwall

How can we use dance in museums to support greater access to and understanding of nature and natural sites?

This Advocacy Event is the second in a series of four from The Imagination Museum, offering an opportunity in the south-west region for heritage, dance and creative practitioners to come together. The Imagination Museum is a national network for dance and heritage professionals interested in collaborating to animate heritage sites with memorable dance activity. 

At this event we invite you to imagine ways that dance can respond to historical sites, objects and collections to increase visitors’ access to and understanding of the environment and the world around us. We will also consider ways that, by connecting people more closely with the world around them, we can also support them to connect more closely with themselves, supporting their health and wellbeing.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful Wheal Martyn Clay Works site and collection, we will offer a programme integrating Case Studies, opportunities to participate in discussion, practical activities and a chance to network and watch films over lunch.

Case Study artists will include dancer Suzie West, who has responded to the Wheal Martyn site on multiple occasions through co-creation projects, performance promenades and films; and fine artist Ruth Purdy, who has worked with communities on creative wellbeing projects, connecting people and environments.

There is an optional second day on Thursday 23rd May for a FREE practical session at Wheal Martyn Clay Works from 10.00-1.00pm. This session will be aimed primarily at dance artists interested in working in response to heritage, but all are welcome. It will be facilitated by The Imagination Museum’s current Strategic Lead, Katie Green.

Who is this for:

This advocacy event is open to anyone from dance, arts, heritage or community contexts with an interest in collaboration and finding creative ways of interpreting local sites, collections and stories through dance and movement. All are welcome, no previous experience is necessary!

Tickets £30 (for those representing organisations); £20 (for freelance practitioners or those representing smaller/volunteer-led organisations)

There are also a limited number of 10 x £5 Bursary places available to freelance practitioners and those representing smaller/volunteer-led organisations on a first-come-first-served basis.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided on Wednesday 22nd May.
