Leave a legacy gift in your will

Is Wheal Martyn one of your special places? Maybe you have worked in the china clay industry, or have a particular passion for the conservation of our Scheduled Ancient Monument, collection or archives. Or, have you simply been inspired by a visit to the museum?

Leaving a legacy gift in your will is one of the most enduring ways you can support our work at Wheal Martyn. Even a small gift can make a real difference, helping us to preserve and improve this unique place and the collection we care for.

We are immensely grateful to everybody who has left us a legacy; as a charity, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us to protect this special place, allowing communities and future generations to engage with this important part of Cornwall’s heritage.

How to leave a gift in your will

Leaving a legacy gift in your will is more straightforward than you might think.

We are a registered charity, so any bequest that you make to Wheal Martyn Trust will be exempt from inheritance tax. Gifts to Wheal squirrelMartyn or any charity can be a specified sum of money (a pecuniary gift) or a proportion of your residuary estate (a residuary gift). Many people choose to leave some or all of their residuary estate to charity; once you have made provision for family and friends, the residue provides an excellent opportunity to give support to the charities which matter most to you.

By leaving at least 10 per cent of your estate to charity, you can also benefit in an overall reduction in inheritance tax from 40 per cent to 36 per cent. This could reduce the amount of tax that may have to be paid out of your estate, leaving more for all the beneficiaries. For UK taxpayers there has never been a better time to consider leaving a charitable legacy.

It won’t cost you anything now but your contribution will support our charity’s aims of education and conservation. If you’ve been inspired by our work, please consider leaving a gift to Wheal Martyn.

If you already have a will but would like to leave a gift to Wheal Martyn

If you already have a will but would like to leave a gift to Wheal Martyn Trust, you can do so by making a simple addition to your existing will. This is called a codicil. This document is a supplement to your will, enabling you to include new instructions and delete old ones without having to go through the task of rewriting the whole will.

If you have already remembered Wheal Martyn in your will

If you are comfortable to do so, please let us know so we can thank you – we would love the opportunity to show our gratitude during your lifetime.

“Every gift in every will makes a difference, no matter how large or small. Whether you decide to leave £50, £5000 or more, it will help us to achieve our mission.”

A perspective on Wheal Martyn, by a volunteer

I like to think that in some small way we volunteers – whatever task we do - are making a contribution to the preservation of the industry history in general and Wheal Martyn (something once commonplace but now virtually unique) in particular.  Not just for the benefit of future generations but also so that it will not be lost.  So future Cornwall explorers can be as astounded as I was.
