Home Education Visits

We offer regular learning workshops for home educated families, delivered by our experienced Education Officer Gemma Martin. The workshops explore themes connected with our local heritage through cross-curricular activities, offering opportunities to engage with a range of creative arts, STEM challenges, history, geography and creative writing.

Places for the workshops are limited so that we can offer safe, fun and meaningful activities. We offer bookings for the current school-term only. Future dates will be released at the end of a school term. Please book in advance below.

For the 2026 academic year, sessions are planned for the following dates (though these may be subject to change, with sufficient notice):

  • Thurs 12 February - Cornish Unit Houses
  • Wed 18 March Evolve / Thurs 2 April Family Workshops
  • Wed 06 May Evolve / Thurs 14 May Family Workshops
  • Wed 10 June Evolve / Thurs 11 June Family Workshops
  • Thurs 9 July Family Workshop
  • June / July Arts Award Bronze and Silver Programme for ages 10+ (dates to be confirmed)

In order to best suit the needs of families, we offer two groups that are age-specific - check to see which would best suit you and your family.

EVOLVE WORKSHOPS Wednesdays: for upper Key Stage 2 and 3 children (age 9+)

Timing: Wednesdays 10.30am – 2.30pm with a break for lunch from approximately 12.15pm-1.00pm

The activities offered in these sessions are most suited to ages 9+. The learners are more independent, working in collaboration with their peers. Parents/carers will work with the Education Officer to facilitate the learning. Once your child is familiar with the setting, the group and through discussion with the Education Officer, parents/carers may leave children for the workshop element and then collect for the lunch break, when they will be responsible for the supervision of their child.

Family LEARNING Workshops thursdays: for mixed age family groups

Timings: Thursdays 10.30am – 2.30pm with a break for lunch from approximately 12.15pm-1.00pm

The activities offered in these sessions are most suitable for school aged children. Younger siblings are welcome and should be booked in (free for under 4's), though some of the activities may be a bit tricky for little ones. Parents/carers will work with the Education Officer to facilitate the learning. Parents/carers must remain in the session and are responsible for the supervision of their own children.

Pre-booking for all children is essential below.

Price: £5.00 per child from age 4, under 4s are free. Please note that even children under 4 require booking. Adults should present a valid ticket or Annual Pass. Bookings are non-refundable.

By booking to attend the Education Workshops you are agreeing to follow the Parent/Carer Code of Conduct.

Cancellation: Please note that whilst we aim to run all our activities for Home Educated families, we do have a minimum number of attendees required for a Workshop to proceed. If we do not have sufficient bookings for an advertised Workshop, we may need to postpone and offer a new date, or cancel and return any fee paid. In these circumstances, we would email anyone who has booked prior to the Workshop date.

    Our museum

China clay mining has shaped the landscape, lives of people and economy of mid-Cornwall for over 250 years. It is Cornwall’s largest mining industry. A fully Accredited Museum, we are based within two Victorian china clay works, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. We tell the story of this fascinating industry and the people who worked and lived in the shadows of Cornwall’s iconic ‘white pyramids’.
